David Baker

David Baker, Distinguished Professor of Music, is Chair of the Jazz Studies Department at Indiana University School of Music. He received his MME from IU in 1954. A celebrated trombonist, Prof. Baker has played in the bands of Quincy Jones, Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, and Lionel Hampton.

International lecturer and clinician, his is the author of Jazz Pedagogy and more than 60 other books on jazz and black music. He has also written numerous articles in Down Beat, Instrumentalist and Orchestra News. Additionally, he serves as a member of arts organizations around the country including the National Council on the Arts; Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, of which he is co-director; and National Jazz Service Organization, of which he is President. He has numerous recordings as a performer, composer and conductor on Columbia, Philips, New World, Laurel, and Liscio labels.
