Timothy J. Bowlby was born in Wolfville Nova Scotia Canada on 23 December,1958. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Acadia University, two Master of Music degrees (composition/theory and musicology) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in composition/theory from UIUC as well. His principal composition teachers were Owen Stephens (Acadia), William Brooks, Morgan Powell, and Paul Martin Zonn (UIUC); he has also worked with Anea Lockwood, Brian Ferneyhough, Milton Babbitt, and Helmut Lachenmann.

He has written music in a number of styles for a wide variety of media. Among his recent works are a duo for flute and oboe, a multi-movement cantata on texts from A PilgrimUs Progress, a trio for violin, violoncello, and piano, and a set of three songs on Shakespeare sonnets for soprano voice and chamber trio. Two of his solo piano compositions, Tested Metals and In Her Moods, are available on compact disc

Dr. Bowlby is currently guest lecturing in compositional pedagogy and serves as Official On-line Composer-in-Residence for the NETCOMM Telementoring Project at the University of Illinois . He is also Director of Chime Choirs and Resident Composer at University Place Christian Church in Champaign.
