Zulema de la Cruz, born in Madrid in 1958, studied piano and composition at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid, graduating with highest honours. She graduated as Master of Arts in Composition and Computer Music at Stanford University (California) in 1987. She has worked, among others, with the following composers: C. Bernaola, L. De Pablo, A. García Abril, R. Alís, L. Hiller, R. Bauer, L. Smith, L. Balada. She extended her musical education at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA, Stanford University) where she worked with J. Chowning. She has been awarded numerous National and international prizes and fellowships, like Ruiz Morales, Arpa de Oro, Luis Coleman and George Maile (USA), among others, and the Ciatat D'Alcoy prize for her Master degree final project Kinesis-2, a piece for string quartet composed at Stanford. This piece was selected for the World Music Days, Norway, 1990, representing Spain. She has been commissioned by the Federación Española de Cajas de Ahorro, Circulo de Bellas Artes de Madrid, Centro para la Difusión de la Música Contemporánea de Madrid (CDMC), Instituto Nacional de las Artes Escénicas y la Música (INAEM), Fundación Sax Ensemble, Madrid Brass, Radio Nacional de España - Radio Clásica (RNE), Diputación Provincial de Jaén, Semana de Música Religiosa de Cuenca, Orquesta Nacional de España, Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid for the celebration of the 2nd of May National day, Orquesta Nacional de España, Quincena Donostiarra, Festival de Santander and Festival de Canarias.

He has been in charge of professional courses, in the Conservatorio de Cuenca, on Electroacoustic Composition, in 1997 and in the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid in 1999. She has taught as collaborator in several others: Curso Internacional Manuel de Falla (Granada, 1988), I Curso de Música por Ordenador from Universidad Menéndez Pelayo, Universidad de Oviedo, Curso de Música del Siglo XX in Sitges 1988, Universidad Europea del Saxofón, Curso de Composición Electroacústica de la AIE. She has acted as jury member in numerous prizes and contests: Concurso para Jóvenes Compositores de la SGAE, Concurso Internacional Ginastera, Premio Reina Sofla (Fundación Ferrer Salat), Premio Internacional de Piano de Jaén.

On the performing side, she is member of the group Sax Ensemble since 1993, as responsible for electroacoustics, having received the Premio Nacional de Música 1997. She is member of the Fundación Sax Ensemble, as well.

Her catalogue includes works for different instruments, chamber music, symphonic music and for electroacoustics (real time, tape-recorded and digital) and in combination with classical instruments.

In 1987 she becomes member of the Asociación de Música Electroacúsffca de España, and in 1995 is part ofthe Board. Since this year she has been advisor for the Concurso Internacional de Piano de Jaén.

In 1997 and 1998 is appointed director of the VI and VII Festival de Música Electroacústica de España, Punto de Encuentro (Las Palmas - Madrid- Barcelona and Pais Vasco - Madrid - Barcelona). In 1998 is appointed member of the Consejo Nacional de La Música of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Culture.

Since 1988 develops her career as professor in the interim chair on Electroacoustic Composition in the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid. She is responsible of the Laboratorio de Investigación y Composición Electroacústica y por Ordenador (LICEO) since its foundation, whose design has developed from the beginning. She has been involved in the contents of the LOGSE Act from 1990.
