Gabriel Erkoreka

Gabriel Erkoreka was born in Bilbao, Spain in 1969. He studied with Carmelo Bernaola and Juan Cordero at the Bilbao and Vitona Conservatoires where he graduated with honours in composition, piano and chamber music. In 1995 he entered the Royal Academy of Music in London to study on the postgraduate course in composition with Michael Finnissy where he obtained the DipRAM and Masters Degree with distinction from the University of London, and was appoointed the Mosco Carner Fellow of Composthon 1997-98. He has also participated in courses and masterclasses with composers such as G.Ligeti, L.Berio, F.Donatoni, H.Birtwistle and Pablo.

His work has been perfomed in the Festival de Música del Siglo XX in Bilbao; Musikaste in Rentería; Festival Internacional de Alicante, Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Fundación Juan March and Auditorio Nacional in Madrid; Warwick and Leamington Music Fesfival (SPNM shortlisted work); the Donatoni Festival at the Royal Academy of Music in London; the ISCM World Music Days 1998 in Manchester; the Toru Takemitsu Award Festival 1999 in Tokyo; and in other cities such as Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin.

He has won several composition competitions and received various prizes for his works including the First Prize of the Premio SGAE 1996 in Madrid; the Prize of the Basque Government; the Josiah Parker Prize and other prizes at the Royal Academy of Music. He has also been selected by the RNE to participate in the Internahonal Rostrum of Composers of the UNESCO in Paris, and for the 1998 Gaudeamus Music Week.

His music has been recorded and broadcast by the RNE, BBC, Music Choice and other radio stations from various countries including Australia, Argentina, Italy and Hungary; and some of his works are available on CD, edited by LIM records and the Fundación Autor. He has received commissions from various institutions including the INAEM, the Nieuw Ensemble, the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Academy of Music.
