Nic Gotham

(Canada)

Born in 1959 near Southampton, England, and raised in Ancaster, Ontario, composer-saxophonist Nic Gotham came to Toronto in 1978 to study Music at York University, where his principal instructors were James Tenney and David Mott. His works include commissions for the Sound Symposium of Newfoundland, the Evergreen Club Gamelan Ensemble, the Bach-Elgar Choir and accordionist Tiina Kiik. His chamber opera Nigredo Hotel (libretto by Ann-Marie MacDonald, produced by Tapestry Music Theatre) has seen three productions, touring Britain and Western Canada. A second opera, Oh Pilot (libretto by Banuta Rubess) will première in 1998. He has composed several scores for live theatre, modern dance and radio drama. Other current projects include works for Toronto's Arraymusic ensemble and a composition for high school concert band.

Equally at ease in concert music, jazz or pop music settings, Nic Gotham freelances on saxophone and performs regularly with Hemispheres and the 40 fingers saxophone quartet. He is a co-founder of Hemispheres Music Projects and served as Artistic Director from 1988 to 1995. From 1982 to 1988, he was known as the leader of the avant-garde jazz group Gotham City.
