Sheung-Ping Lai

(U.S.A.)

Born in Hong Kong, Sheung-Ping Lai came to the United States in 1985. She received her Master of Music degree in composition from the Cleveland Institute of Music and her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition from The Ohio State University. Her composition teachers include Law Wing-Fai, John Rinehart, Donald Erb, Thomas Wells and Elliott Schwartz. After graduating from OSU, Dr. Lai joined the music faculty at The University of Akron and Ball State University as an adjunct professor. Currently, she is a free-lance composer and private music teacher in Columbus, Ohio.

Dr. Lai's compositions include a variety of genres. She is particularly interested in merging the musical languages of both Chinese and Western cultures. Among her composition prizes were the Hong Kong Young Musicians Awards in 1984 and 1985, and the American Society of University Composers award in 1987. Her song cyde was recommended for an Individual Artist Fellowship in Music Composition by the Ohio Arts Council in 1992. Her compositions have been performed and broadcast in both Hong Kong and the United States.
