José Luis Maúrtua

José Luis Maúrtua was born in Trujillo, Peru on Dec 13, 1964. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Composition from the Carlos Valderrama Conservatory in Trujillo in 1987, a Master's Degree in Composition from George Mason University in 1966, and has just completed his Doctoral Degree in Composition from The Florida State University School of Music. In 1998, Mr. Maúrtua attended composition master classes at the Prague Academy of Music in the Czech Republic, organized by the Czech-American Summer Music Institute. In 1999, his Peruviana for solo piano was awarded first prize at the Outstanding Student Composer's Competition, organized by the Southem Chapter of the College Music Society. As a guest conductor, Dr. Maúrtua performs with the Trujillo Symphony Orchestra, the Trujillo Chamber Orchestra and the Florida State University New Music Ensemble. At the 1999 FSU New Music Festival, he conducted the premier performance of Joseph Rovan's inter-active electronic composition, Aerial Variations for Alto Saxophone and Chamber Orchestra, with Professor Patrick Meighan as the soloist.

José Maúrtua has taught at the Carlos Valderrama Conservatory in Peru, the Columbia Institute of Fine Arts in Virginia, the Bell Multicultural High School in Washington, D.C., and as an assistant instructor at Florida State University. He has recently been appointed Assistant Professor of Composition/Theory and Director of the New Music Ensemble at Central Michigan University in Mt.Pleasant, Michigan.
