Andrew Mead

Andrew Mead (b. 1952), chair of the Music Theory Department at The University of Michigan, earned his Ph.D. from Princeton University. Among his recent grants and fellowships are the Goddard Lieberson Fellowship from the American Institute/Academy of Arts and Letters, a composition fellowship from the Composers Conference at Wellesley College and a Rackham Faculty Fellowship from The University of Michigan. In 1990 the Society for Music Theory awarded Dr. Mead the Young Scholar Publications Award. He has edited and published analytical and theoretical articles in Music Theory Spectrum, Perspectives of New Music, Entretemps and Musical Quarterly. His book An Introduction to the Music of Milton Babbitt is published by Princeton University Press.

Recent compositions include his Concerto for Alto Saxophone and 11 Players; a trio for violin, horn and piano, commissioned by the League/ISCM; and Variation-Fantasy, comrnissioned by guitarist Todd Seelye. Renowned oboist Harry Sargous has recorded Dr. Mead's Scena for Solo Oboe.
