Bob Mintzer

(U.S.A.)

Bob Mintzer began playing by ear at an early age, and actually took lessons on the clarinet before taking up the tenor sax, for which he was best known, in high school. Over the years, he also learned to play bass clarinet, soprano sax, and guitar. "As a young person," he recalls, "I was just attracted to all kinds of music." After high school, he attended the Interlocken Arts Academy, the Hart College of Music, and the Manhattan School of Music.

Throughout the '70s and '80s, Mintzer performed with a wide variety of musicians, including Tito Puente, Buddy Rich, Art Blakey, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Sam Jones, Tom Harrel, Eddie Palmieri, Jaco Pastorius, and David Sanborn. In 1984, he formed his own big band, which has since recorded 11 albums, 4 of which received Grammy nominations. In 1990, Mintzer joined the highly acclaimed Grammy-winning jazz group the Yellowjackets, and has played on six of the group's albums. He has performed and recorded with the GRP All-Star Big Band and is a frequent guest of such ensembles as the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.

In addition to perfoming, Mintzer is an accomplished composer and arranger, with over 200 big band arrangements and a saxophone method book to his credit. His music writing career started while he was with the Buddy Rich Big Band. "Buddy basically threatened me into writing a big band arrangement," he smiles, "I very blindly and innocently took a stab at it." He is also presently a saxophone instructor at the Manhattan School of Music.
