Renee Silas Waters

(U.S.A.)

Renee Silas Waters is associate professor of music at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri. She has written a number of works for her husband, saxophonist Jeffery Waters, including Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra which received its premiere by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the University of Georgia Orchestra in 1989.

She was given the title of Missouri Composer of the Year by the Missouri Music Teachers Association in 1991, and the resulting state-level commission, Meditation and Frenzy (for alto saxophone and piano) was awarded second prize at the national level (MTNA). Most recently, her career has focused on teaching, developing SBU's Macintosh-MIDI computer laboratory, and coordinating computer-assisted instruction for SBU music courses. An avid student of Baroque and contemporary counterpoint, she was easily intrigued with the challenge of composing within the limits of canonic counterpoint while utilizing contemporary technology in order to create the multiple voices and effects.
