Gary Smoke

Gary Smoke received his BM in Organ Performance and DMA in composition from The Univemity of Alabama where his principal studies were with Warren Hutton and Frederic Goossen. He has also studied with composem Hubert S. Howe, Andrew W. Imbrie, and Ross Lee Finney.

His compositions have been performed at The University of Alabama, The University of Florida, The Univemity of Kansas, The Eastman School of Music, and at many regional conventions of the Society of Composers, Inc., the College Music Society, a National Flute Association convention and at a national convention of the American Guild of Organists.

In 1992 he was awarded a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts for which he composed Suite for 4-Hands (piano), Concerto for Flute, Harpsichord and Strings, and Sonata No. 1 for Flute and Harpsichord. Recent commissions include the anthems How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place for the First United Methodist Church of Portales, New Mexico and Preach the Word for First United Methodist Church of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. His catalog of works includes an opera, two string quartets, electronic music, and many works for small ensembles.

Dr. Smoke works currently as a composer, copyist, and teacher in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He is also organist/choir director at Fayette (AL) First United Methodist Church. Dr. Smoke is the owner of High Meadow Music Publishing which specializes in publishing handbell and organ music. His organ Variations on Jesu, meine Freude is published by Concordia.
