Harvey Stokes

Harvey J. Stokes is Professor of Music at Hampton University, where he also is the Founder and Director of the Computer Music Laboratory. His degrees are from Michigan State University (Ph. D.), the University of Georgia (M. M.), and East Carolina University (B. M.). His composition instructors include Drs. Brett Watson, Alan Leichtling, John Corina, Lewis Nielson, Jere Hutcheson, and Charles Ruggerio.

He is the author of two books on music as well as an award-winning composer of numerous works. His compositions have been performed by many ensembles: the Richmond Symphony, the Lancaster Symphony, the Virginia Beach Symphony, the Oxford String Quartet, the Quapaw String Quartet, the Still String Quartet, the Downtown String Ensemble, the Richmond Chamber Players, the Georgia Woodwind Quintet, the New England Conservatory Contemporary Ensemble, and the Milhaud Trio.

Compositional activities in recent years include the completion of several commissioned works, invited participations in conferences of the Society of Composers as well as the Southeastern Composers League, and an invited composer residency at West Chester University. The Oxford String Quartet has also released internationally on Albany Records a CD containing three of his four string quartets.
