Joseba Torre

Joseba Torre was born in Bilbao (Spain) in 1968. He began music studies at the Conservatory "J.C. de Arriaga", the Center of Musical Studies "J. de Antxieta" of his native city, and the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música of Madrid (Spain). He continued his education at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique of Paris, where he completed doctoral studies in composition and conducting, graduating with honors. He earned Master degrees in electronic and computer music from IRCAM in Paris and Musicology from the University of Paris VIII. He also got a Master in Composition and Conducting at Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, USA).

As a composer, he has studied with L. Balada, A. Bancquart, R. Castro, L. Cuniot, G. Grisey, B. Jolas, M. Linberg, E. Nunes, P. Mefano, T. Murail, J.C. Risset, H. Vaggione. He has attended a great number of courses and master classes given by L. De Pablo, F. Donatoni, B. Ferneyhough, C. Halffter, K. Huber among others.

His works include symphonic, chamber, electroacoustic, vocal, ballet, and solo pieces. Some of them have been performed in many internationals festivals like: Festival de Música Contemporánea de Alicante (Spain), Musikaste de Rentería (Spain), Quincena Musical de San Sebastián (Spain), Cursos de Verano Festival de Música Contemporánea de Darmstadt (Germany), Festival de música contemporánea de La Habana (Cuba), Los lenguajes de la nueva música en Milán (Italy), Festival Nuova Consonanza (Roma. Italy), III Jornadas de música contemporánea de Oporto (Portugal), Jornadas de música contemporánea de Strasbourg (France), Festival de Música de Perpignan (France), Temporadas del CDMC, Centro Georges Pompidour e Instituto Cervantes (París, France), Temporadas del CDMC, Orquesta Nacional e Instituto Francés de Madrid (Spain), and played by the most important ensembles like: Grupo Círculo, Grupo L.I.M., Cámara XXI, L’Itinéraire, TM+, Court-Circuit, L’instant Donné, Musiques Croisées, Grupo Manon, Duo Contemporain, Cuarteto de Cuerda Via-Nova de París, Cuarteto Petersen de Berlín, Orquesta Sinfónica de Bilbao, Orquesta Nacional de España, etc.

He has been commissioned by the Centro para la Difusión de la Música Contemporánea (Spain), Ministry of Culture (Spain), I.N.A.E.M. (Spain), Quincena Musical de San Sebastián, Symphonic Orchestra of Bilbao (Spain), National Orchestra of Spain, and many International associations and institutions.

He has participated in conferences and round table discussions in Paris (France), Milán (Italy), Darmstadt (Germany), Brussels (Belgium), Madrid, San Sebastián, Oviedo, Bilbao (Spain), etc.

He was a member of the final jury for the Composition Prize given by SGAE 1995 celebrated in the National Auditorium of Madrid, and in the juries of the International Composition Competition of Murcia 1996 and 1997, Composition Prize from the Ministry of Education and Culture in Spain 1996 and 1997.

He obtained First Prizes in international and national competitions in composition, like the "Pablo Sorozábal" International Competition 1992, "Nadia Boulanger" International Prize 1993, SGAE Competition 1994, International orchestral music Competition in Murcia 1995, National competition from the Ministry of Culture in Spain 1995, Special Mention in the International electroacoustic music Competition of Bourges 1996, First Prize in the International electroacoustic music Competition of Bourges 1997, Prize Ojo Crítico from National Radious of Spain 1997. He is combining his work as a composer as well as a conductor.

He is currently the President of the Basque-Country Composer Association.
