Jesús Torres

(Espagne - Spain)

Jesús Torres was born in Zaragoza (Spain) on July 15th 1965. He studied at the Conservatorio Superior de Madrid violin, piano, harmony and counterpoint. At the same time, he attended several seminars of musical analysis given by Luis de Pablo. He left the conservatory in 1986 and his year he begun to study composition with Francisco Guerrero, with whom he works until 1988.

He has received the following prizes:

  • First Prize SGAL (Spanish Authors Society) Madrid 1992.
  • Finalist at the 14th Irino Prize, Tokyo 1993.
  • Special Mention at the I Concorso Internazionale Nuove Sincronie, Milano 1994.
  • Gaudeamus Prize, Amsterdam 1995.
  • Selected to represent Spain at the ISCM World Music Days, Copenhagen 1996.
  • Second Prize at the Ensemblia Kompositionswettbewerb, Mönchengladbach 1997.
  • First Prize Valentio Bucchi, Roma 1997.
  • Selected to represent Spain at the ISCM World Music Days, Bucharest 1999.

He has received commissions from official and private institutions such as: INAEM (Spanish Ministry of Culture), Gaudeamus Foundation (Amsterdam), Kaleidoscope Foundation (European Union), Young National Orchestra of Spain.

His music has been performed in Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Greece, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Japan, Brazil, Venezuela...

He has participated in many festivals: Festival de Alicante, Festival de Santander, Jornadas de Arte, Contemporanca de Porto, Festival Nuove Sincronie, Gaudeamus Music Week, Internationale Kulturtage der Stadt Dortmund, World Music Days, Musica Nova, Festival A Tempo...

During 1998, he was Composer-in-Residence of the Young National Orchestra of Spain.
