Rodney Waschka II

Rodney Waschka is a composer/performer working with algorithmic composition, intermedia pieces, and music for traditional ensembles. Born of a Polish-American father and an Italian-American mother in Memphis, Tennessee, he studied composition and computer music at Brooklyn College, at the Institute of Sonology in the Royal Conservatory, The Hague, The Netherlands, and at the University of North Texas where he received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree. His teachers include Larry Austin, Paul Berg, Charles Dodge, Thomas Clark, Clarence Barlow, Joel Ryan, Cindy McTee, and Martin Mailman. Waschka's works consist of compositions for traditional instruments and often include computers, synthesizer/tape or other media: visuals, theater, poetry. His pieces have been performed throughout Europe and the US, in Asia, Central and South America, and Israel.

Recordings of Waschka's music are available on IRIDA Records (two works) (USA) and he appears as a performer/collaborator on Ama Romanta Records (Portugal). His pieces, A Noite, Porem, Rangeu E Color Quebrou, (instrument, computer, and tape) Last Night, (alto saxophone and piano), Help Me Remember (performer, real-time computer music systems, slides, and tape) and Xuan Men (violin alone) have all appeared on recent Centaur compact discs. A forthcoming cd recording will include Visions of Habakkuk (computer music on tape). Composition, performances, and recordings of Waschka's music have been supported by grants and commissions from The National Endowment for the Arts, Meet The Composer, Texas Composers' Forum, RESONANS (The Netherlands), the Logos Foundation (Belgium), North Carolina State University, Addison Centre Theater, the Hip Pocket Theater, and the University of North Texas.

Waschka is an Associate Professor at North Carolina State University. He is the Managing Director of CDCM: Consortium to Distribute Computer Music, and has served as an of ficer of the International Computer Music Association, 1990-96. In addition to composing, Waschka has written a number of reviews and scholarly articles on composition and theory. Waschka's music is distributed by Deep Listening Publications (the IRIDA recording) which is curated by Pauline Oliveros, Harmonia Mundi (the Centaur compact discs), and published by American Composers Editions (NY) and Borik Press (NC).
