Adam Yee

(Australie - Australia)

Born in 1974, Adam Yee was educated in Melbourne and obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in performance (oboe) from the Victorian College of the Arts in 1994. As well as having extensive experience as an oboist with a number of groups (including the Geminiani Chamber Orchestra and Libra Contemporary Ensemble), he has founded a contemporary opera company, KleZeyn Theatre, and has composed and staged three operas - Don't Open the Door, The Road to Hell is Paved with Slaughter, and Bangers - at La Mama Theatre in Melbourne. Yee has also conducted his own compositions, which have been performed by ensembles such as Libra Contemporary Ensemble and the Astra Chamber Music Society. Many of his works are inspired by his intense interest in Judaism and the Hebrew language.

Yee's experience as a performer has influenced his compositional style in that his musical ideas "are intimately connected with the practicalities of performance." He believes that "composers need to be directly accountable to performers, and should be willing and able to explain anything they write in such a way as to make it accessible to an average orchestral player, whatever his or her background in new music." His works include In Memoriam Anton Webern (mixed ensemble), Shiru l'adonai shir Hadash (clarinet in A, violin, flute, guitar), Du hast die Greuel gesehn' (oboe), and Lot (piano).
