Cherubs on the Ceiling was commissioned in 1990 by Dr. Griffin Campbell and members of the Valcour String Quartet. The commission stipulated that the piece should be based, in some way, on one of any of the photographs in Clarence Laughton's book Ghosts Along the Mississippi. The composer selected a photograph of three cherubs painted on the ceiling of an antebellum mansion. The resulting composition is a single-movement scherzo which pits a decidedly uncherubic saxophone againts three string instruments."
