Dr.Barrington Coleman,tenor. Associate Professor of Voice and Conductor of the Varsity Men's Glee Club (1996) - University of Illinois / School of Music B.M., Illinois Wesleyan University; M.M., Northwestern University; D.M.A., The Juilliard School.

Prior to his appointment at UIUC, Dr. Coleman was assistant professor of voice and conductor of the Limited Edition Jazz Choral Ensemble at Illinois Wesleyan University, Bloomington.

He has performed and recorded as a soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, Music of the Baroque Ensemble, Royal Opera House of Covent Garden, La Fenice (Venice, Italy), Glyndebourne Opera, London Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras, Sunday Evening Club of WTTW-TV in Chicago, and performed under the auspices of numerous concert organizations. He has presented various lecture, recitals, workshops, and festivals nationally.

Coleman had served as adjudicator in universities, high schools, community arts organizations, churches, and an array of professional music associations in America as a classical, jazz, and gospel artist.

As a jazz pianist, Coleman has free-lanced with many prominent jazz artists, such as Christian McBride, Lonnie Plaxico, Sam Rivers, Paul Wertico, and Joe Morello. Coleman is presently director, pianist, and vocalist of The Barrington Coleman Trio, a mainstream midwest-based jazz group.

In 1990, he and his wife, internationally-acclaimed lyric soprano Cynthia Haymon, performed in the world premiere of Richard Blackford's King, and they are also featured in a recording (EMI label) and film of Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. In January, 1999, he was guest conductor and clinician for the Illinois Music Educators All-State High School Chorus, as well a featured conductor for the February, 2000 American Choral Conductor's Association Central Region Male Chorus Conference. During his affiliation with University of Illinois he has served as a guest lecturer and performer for a nationally recognized arts education endeavor, known as the Black Sacred Music Symposium of Illinois, held on the UIUC campus.

In addition to his private vocal instruction,and conductor of the recording and touring ensemble,Varsity Men's Glee Club,which participated in an extensive European performance tour in the Spring of 2000, Coleman also is musical director of the east-central Illinois founded Christian community chorus known as the Singing Men of WGNN (radio).

Barrington and wife Cynthia, have two sons, Crofton Macallister, age 6, and Camden Maclyndon, born November, 1999.
