James Hill


James Hill received a Bachelor of Music degree in music performance from Northwestern University, where he studied saxophone with Fred Hemke and conducting with John Paynter and Margaret Hillis. His Master of Music degree, also in music performance, is from The Ohio State University, where he studied saxophone with Burdette Green. His graduate schooling included extensive study of electronic music.

Mr. Hill's teaching experience has included teaching saxophone and conducting the Concert Band at Hartt College of Music in Connecticut, before becoming Professor of Saxophone at The Ohio State University, where he has taught since 1978. In addition, he has been a member of the performance faculty of the Interprovincial Music Camp in Ontario since 1976.

Mr. Hill's career as saxophone performer/clinician has included appearances throughout the United States and in Canada. In addition to performances at colleges and universities in both countries, he has appeared at several international conferences of the World Saxophone Congress, as well as national and regional conferences of several musical organizations. He has performed in the Chicago Symphony and the Columbus Symphony orchestras, and appeared as soloist with the Columbus Symphony in 1990 for a performance of Russell Peck's The Upward Stream, a concerto for tenor saxophone and orchestra.

In addition to his musical interests, Hill is a member of the Ohio K9 Search Team, a volunteer organization which uses trained dogs to locate missing persons and drowning victims. He has been active on numerous missions throughout the state of Ohio.
