Blow! (1993)

Blow! (for saxophone quartet) is a 13-minute, single-movement tour-de-force requiring a great amount of technique and musicianship from each member of the quartet. Set in rondo form, the main theme of which is varied and developed with each reprise, the work includes sections of driving rhythmic unisons, baroque-style counterpoint, and lyrical chorales. Also included is an extended blues section that features the tenor saxophone, a well as a swing-style coda that features the baritone and soprano saxophones. There is an improvisatory quality to the solos in these blues and swing sections, even though the solos are written out by the composer. The piece concludes with a true "blow": constant sextuplets throughout the ensemble at a fortissimo dynamic, interspersed with short motives from previous sections of the work.
