Janis Steprans was born in Montreal March 23, 1958. While an undergraduate at McGill University, he won the concerto competition, performing Tomasi's Ballade with the McGill Symphony Orchestra. He was a Canada Council grant recipient in 1981 and 1983. He studied witj Joe Allard at the New England Conservatory and graduated from NEC with a Master's degree (Afro-American studies) in 1982.

He has played with George Russell's Living Time Orchestra (1982) and is the saxophone instructor in jazz area at the Faculty of Music of McGill University since 1986.

He has performed at jazz festivals in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Stockholm, Porri (Finland) and Riga (Latvia). He was a member of the Gerald Danovitch Saxophone Quartet (1993-1994) and performed on Jim Hillman's Juno award-winning album, "The Merlin Factor" (1994). He has recorded as leader on CBC radio's "Jazzbeat" and Radio-Canada's "Jazz sur le vif" and has recorded two CD's as leader, "New Morning" (Amplitude, 1992) and "Second Set" (DSM, 1995). He has performed with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and the National Arts Center Orchestra (Ottawa).

He is presently working on a Dctoral music program at McGill Univeristy and studied with George Coleman (1997-1998).
