[saxophone et électronique / saxophone and digital tape delay]

* Création / World premiere

The commission for Backspace has been accepted by the composer, Renee Silas Waters. It is a multi-sectional (but continuous) work scored for saxophone and digital tape delay. The live acoustic performance of the saxophonist is digitally recorded and immediately played back as many times as desired at precise rhythmic intervals via an effects processor and an onstage sound system. The effect will be, of course, a continuous canon of 2 or more voices (depending on the variable programming of the delay) all being originally generated by the one acoustic performer.
Jeffery Waters is professor of music and chairman of the department of music at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri where he teaches saxophone, double reeds, theory, and jazz ensemble. He earned the master of music and doctor of musical arts degrees from the University of Georgia where he studied saxophone with Kenneth Fischer; he earned the bachelor of science in education with a major in music from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama, where he studied saxophone with Ronald Attinger.

He is an active performer as a soloist, as well as with the Springfield Symphony and other professional ensembles in the southwest Missouri area; and has made a number of appearances at meetings of the North American Saxophone Alliance and the World Saxophone Congress, serving as second vice-president of NASA from 1996 to 1998.

He has been active in the solicitation of new works for the saxophone; among these are Transmigrations for Alio Saxophone and Marimba by John Prescott, and a number of works by his wife Renee Silas Waters, including Rotations, Meditation and Frenzy, The Scream, Fishin ', Duo for Alto Saxophone and Multi-Percussion, Concerto, and Quartet.
