The West Point Saxophone Quartet, from the United States Military Academy Band at West Point, New York, is comprised of members of the saxophone section of the Academy's concert band. The quartet has appeared in a wide variety of settings throughout the Northeastern United States, presenting both clinics and recitals for schools and communities.

Founded in 1965, the West Point Saxophone Quartet, formally known as the Hudson Valley Saxophone Quartet, consists of soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones. The ensemble performs a wide variety of music within the classical, jazz and popular idioms, and exposes its audience to the technical virtuosity, tonal beauty, and versatility of which the saxophone family is capable. Within the repertoire of the group is the music of such composers as Samuel Adler, J.S. Bach, Frederic Chopin, Pierre Dubois, Paul Hindemith, Mike Mower, Claude Pascal and Phil Woods. The quartet welcomes original compositions and commissions.

Through their musicality, skill, and commitment to duty, the members of the West Point Saxophone Quartet represent and serve the United States Military Academy, the United States Army, and the American people with pride.

Master Sergeant Joseph Mariany - baritone saxophone, is the saxophone section leader of the United States Military Academy Concert Band. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from St. Thomas Aquinas College and is currently pursuing a master's degree in Computer Science from Iona College. He began studying clarinet at age nine, at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. Prior to joining the Army in 1974, Sergeant Mariany performed with the Florida Symphony Orchestra and with the Walt Disney World Band in Orlando, Florida. He has been a member of the Forces Command Band in Atlanta and was the senior clarinet/saxophone instructor at the Armed Forces School of Music in Norfolk, Virginia prior to joining the West Point Band in 1977.

Master Seargeant Daniel Teare - tenor saxophone, hails from Flint, Michigan. His musical studies were at Michigan State University; Berklee College of Music in Boston; and at the Paris-American Academy in Paris, France. MSG Teare has been a member of the quartet since 1987 and a member of The United States Military Academy Band since 1984. His performances have been enjoyed in many prestigious concert halls to include the Orchestra Hall in Philadelphia, Madison Square Garden and Carnegie Hall. MSG Teare performs regularly with a number of other ensembles in and around the Hudson Valley region. He also serves as Assistant Drum Major of the USMA Marching Band.

Staff Sergeant Lois Hicks - alto saxophone, is the newest member of the saxophone section, having joined the United States Military Academy Band in April 1996. She began playing the saxophone at age eleven and was performing solo recitals at the age of sixteen. SSG Hicks has studied at the Interlochen Arts Academy, the University of North Texas and Florida State University. While at Florida State, she completed a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance, and continued Master's studies in Saxophone Performance and Ethnomusicology. Her teachers include Frederick Hemke, Patrick Meighan and Debra Richtmeyer. Among her many awards is the Special Presentation Winners Recital Series, sponsored by Artists International Presentations. As her prize, she performed her New York Recital Debut at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in January, 1996.

Staff Sergeant Wayne Tice - soprano saxophone, received his Bachelor's Degree in Music from Old Dominion University, where he studied with Dennis Zeisler. He did his graduate work with Lynn Klock at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he was the Saxophone Teaching Assistant. Following the completion of his Master of Music Degree in Saxophone Performance, SSG Tice performed at several North American Saxophone Alliance conventions and was a featured soloist at the New England Saxophone Symposium. SSG Tice has premiered more than a dozen works including the world premiere of Yusef Lateef's Romances for Soprano and Harp. Prior to joining the United States Military Academy Band in October 1995, SSG Tice was the sabbatical replacement for Mr. Klock at the University of Massachusetts and a freelance musician in the Saratoga, New York region.
