|Commissioned by saxophonists Angela Wyatt and Matt Sinchak, Shadows derives its title from some of the fleeting qualities of the four movements, who present various aspects of the title's different meanings - literally and figuratively. The unusual combination of instruments arose from the four musicians' wish to perform together. And having a piece for all four instruments that wasn't a transcription seemed like a good idea.
Structurally and character-wise, all four movements are quite different, although the continual shifting of instrument groupings occurs throughout the piece.
