Boulanger, Nadia

b. September 16, 1887, Paris, France - d. October 22, 1979, Paris France.

French composer and teacher.

Although Nadia Boulanger has never written for the saxophone, she is such an important figure in the development of many 20th composers that I felt she had to be mentioned on this site.

Several American composers are among her stable of students, most notably Aaron Copland, Philip Glass, Quincy Jones,

She has been cited as saying:

“Originality is the art of concealing your source.”
