John Henry Variations is based on the old American blues ballad cum bluegrass hit: "John Henry." In four movements, the piece ranges in mood from brooding gospel and an Ellingtonesque "train" theme, to a variation in an Indian mode that segues to a metronomic exploration of the tune to the accompaniment of the Greenwich Standard Time tone taken from the short wave radio. |
