b. September 2, 1898 - Brooklyn, NY, USA / d. July 11, 1937 - Beverley Hills, CA, USA
American composer and pianist.
Gershwin is one of America's most important musical figures. Best known for innumerable songs which were written, often with his brother Ira, for Broadway musicals. Some of these have become staples of jazz players as well as singers.
Beyond his work in the tin pan alley style, Gershwin also wanted to produce art music. A few of his works have established him as an important figure in this field, especially his Rhapsody in Blue and the Piano Concerto.
